lascasartoris:

showgirls in Kinshasa, Congo, 1960s by Jean Depara.
Completely fallen in love with Jean Depara’s photos of nightlife in 1960s Kinshasa, Congo.
From their nylon stockings to the fabric celebrating President De Gaulle’s 1958 visit to the neighboring French Congo (today The Republic of Congo) and his promise of independence for France’s African Colonies.
This quartet of showgirls - with their chiffon gloves, sequins and tulle - in spite of seeming hardened are rippling with hope, glamour and modernity.
Love it.

The hats, scarfs, hoods, jackets, coats should tell you a little bit about #1 how cold it is here #2 how these students have to learn on a daily basis in little buildings with no heat, tin roof, and broken windows (b/c as I said before money is scarce so they must be more concerned w/ feeding these children every day than with repairs sometimes) #3 how committed they are to doing what they have to do to get to where they’re trying to go. #EveryDayHumbled
